私は英語は苦手で、英語の成績は良くはなかった。なので、英語を頑張って書いているけれど、ペラペラしゃべれるとかそういうことはない。

このホタルガ(Pidorus atratus)の記事を書こうとして、「派手だ」と書きたいのだが、インターネットの翻訳サイトは「派手」を “gay” と訳してしまう。
確かに “gay” には「派手」という意味もある。 しかしあまり公然と言いにくい意味も持っている。
I tried to write this moth’s(Pidorus atratus) article and rebuked. The translation site of the Internet translates “Hade(Japanese)” into “Gay” though I want to write the word of the meaning “He is showy”. There is certainly a meaning “Showy” in “Gay”, too. However, it has the meaning that cannot be said too much in a public way.

彼は派手な蛾だ。と書きたいのに “He is a gay moth.” と訳してしまう。これじゃ、「オス専門のガ」みたいだよね…。とりあえず、”vivid”とか、”colorful”とかに逃げておくことにしました。
I want to write “He is a showy moth.” But, translation site translates “He is a gay moth.” In this mean, it is “Moth of the male specialty. ” …It decided to write to “Vivid” or “Colorful” for the time being.

ホタルガは、昼間に行動するちょっと変わった蛾です。昼間なのになんで目立つ黒い姿をしているんだろう。さらに目立つ赤い頭をしてるんだろう…。進化の意図が掴みきれない私なのでした。ちなみに幼虫は毒毛はないのですが、毒汁を分泌します。かぶれるので注意してくださいね。
This moth(Pidorus atratus) is a moth that unique that acts in daytime. A black appearance that stands out though daytime why might be done. In addition, it might have a red head that stands out. Because it was me who was not able to understand the intention of evolution, it did. By the way, the larva secretes Poisonal liqid. 春。日本ではゴールデンウィークと呼ばれる連休の日々。日本人たちはあちこちに旅行をする。渡り鳥たちは、越冬を終え、今度は繁殖するために暖かくなりつつある北へ向かう（北半球での話）。
Spring. There are consecutive holidays that are called Golden Week in Japan.
At that time, Japanese travel here and there. The migratory birds finish passing the winter in spring. And, to breed, the migratory birds head for the north (In case of the northern hemisphere).

ちょうど、日本人の動く時期と渡り鳥の移動時期が重なって、私とこのマヒワは出会いました。10cmちょっとのこの体で、年に2回も何千kmもの旅をする。もちろん疲れるので時々島などで休息をとる。すごい生命力だ。しかし、渡りの途中では鷹などの外敵にも襲われやすい時期です。精神的にも疲れるのでしょう。
This eurasian siskin met me as time where the Japanese moved and migratory bird’s movement time came in succession just. The travel of thousands of kilometers is done twice a year by this body a little 10cm. The rest is sometimes taken on the island etc, because the migratory birds become tired of course. It is great vitality. However, the migratory birds have the danger attacked also by the foreign enemy of the hawk etc, for this period. The migratory birds might mentally become tired.

マヒワはなりふりかまわず、私の目の前でセイヨウタンポポをむさぼり食べていました。私を気にしているが、飛び立つ余裕も無い。今食べなければ渡りが終えられないんだね。普段見せる、鳥の余裕を全く感じさせない時期。改めて渡りの厳しさを知りました。
The eurasian siskin ate Common Dandelion without caring about one’s look in my presence. There is no composure of feelings to which the eurasian siskin flies away, though the eurasian siskin considers me. If it doesn’t surely eat the siskin now, the migratory flight might not be finished. I was known the severity of the migratory flight, again.

車で林道を走っていると、道の真ん中で日光浴をしているアオダイショウに出会いました。普通なら、車を見たあと即座に逃げるか、しばらく様子を見てから逃げるものなんですが、このアオダイショウは違いました。果敢にも（無謀にも？）車に対して威嚇姿勢をとっています。
When I was running in the woodland path by car, I met Japanese rat snake that was basking at the center of the road. If she is a usual snake, she is one to run away immediately or it sees how things go for a while. But, she was different. She threatened resolutely to the car.

変なアオダイショウだな、と思って車を降りてどかそうとすると、めちゃくちゃに咬まれました。何でこんなに気が荒いんだろう？と思ってよく観察すると、おなかが不自然にたくさん膨れていました。季節は初秋。
I thought, “She is strange snake…”. I got off the car to remove her, she bit me so many times. Her abdominal region has swollen unnaturally when I often observe the snake. The season is an early fall.

ああ、そうか、妊婦さんだったんだ。卵を守りたかったのかな。
I see! She was a pregnant woman! Did she want to defend eggs?

これほどまでに気の荒いアオダイショウに出会ったのは初めてでした。母は強い…ということなのかな。
For me, it was the first time to meet Japanese rat snake that the character is rough like this. …Mother is strong!

くちばしがゆがまないせいか、私は鳥には表情が哺乳類ほど無いように見えてしまう。明らかに表情で威嚇してみたり、喜びを表現することは鳥には難しいのかもしれない。しかしその分、「動き」での表情は多彩だと思う。哺乳類をはるかに超えたいろんな表現をするようにも思える。
There seem to be up to the bird me by the expression and not be mammal. The reason for the beak is that movement is limited. It might be difficult for the bird to express threat, and to express pleasure. However, I think that bird’s expression in “Movement” is variegated. The bird seems to do the expression that exceeds the mammal at “Movement”.

そんな表情の無い鳥たちに、思いがけず表情がついたときは素直に笑える。
I laugh obediently when the expression unexpectedly attaches to birds who do not have such an expression.

偶然ですが、このオオハクチョウ(Cygnus cygnus)には「もさもさ」に鼻毛が生えている。古典的な「お笑い」手法だけど、見つけたときは笑いをこらえるのが大変だった。
This Whooper Swan(Cygnus cygnus) had nose hair, unexpectedly. When he was found, it was serious to endure laughing me.

この鼻毛、あとでちゃんと取る事ができたのかな？

雪を食べてのどの渇きを癒す。寒い地域の動物では当たり前の行動なのかもしれない。食べているものが雪であっても、イタチの仲間の食事姿は迫力がある。
Sable is suppressing which dryness that eats the snow. It might be a natural action in the animal in a cold region. Even if the eaten one is a snow, weasel’s meal appearance has power. Sable is distributed worldwide widely. However, to take the fur very often in the past, the quality of their furs seems to have been captured considerably.

エゾクロテンは完全な肉食ではありません。ウンチを見ると、けっこう植物質のものが混じったりしています。北海道にはアメリカミンクなど多数のイタチ類が帰化したりしていますが、これほど植物質を食べるイタチも珍しいかもしれませんね。
Sable is not a complete eating meat. The one of the plant has mixed considerably when excrement is seen. A lot of weasels such as American mink have been naturalized in Hokkaido. However, the weasel that eats the plant like this might be also rare.

たくましく、生き延びて欲しい。
I want them to survive vigorously.

北海道の町の中の小川。サケ（シロザケ）は一生の最後をここで迎えた。
Here is a stream in a town in Hokkaido. The chum salmon faced the end of the life here.

後悔はないだろうか。こんな傷だらけになってかわいそうに。そう思うのは人間だけだ。
“Isn’t there regret?” “I think it is poor because he was scratched so much.” It is only “human” that thinks so.

彼らのDNAはこういう死を生まれながらにして持っている。生存競争を乗り越え、そして最後は産卵、放精して渓流で死ぬ。
Such a death is made inborn and their DNA has so destiny. The struggle for existence is got over, and they leave offspring, and they die in the stream.

センチメンタルな部分は何もない。
There are no sentimental feelings here.

川に上がる途中ヒグマに食われ、キタキツネに食われ、人間に食われる。危険を冒しても溯上しなければならない。しかしそこに責任感はない。最後の溯上は、ただただ子孫を残すためにDNAが指令を出す。
While they go up to the river, they are eaten by the brown bear , the red fox, and by human. After, the chum salmon should be going up the river even if running the risk. However, there is no sense of responsibility. Only to leave offspring on the death, DNA issues a directive.

こういう姿を見ると、遺伝子を残す為だけに生きるウイルスと何も変わらない。
As for anything, when I am faced such a seen, it is not different from the virus where it lives only to leave the gene.

私も、死の直前は感情を捨てたい。
I want to throw away feelings immediately before the death.

水の染み出たガレ場の中から、「グッグッ」と独特の鳴き声が聞こえる。タゴガエルはいつもそんなところで鳴いているので、なかなか鳴いている姿を見ることはできない。姿を見たくて、ガレ場の石をどけるとすぐにその姿を拝むことができた。ところが、どうもそこは産卵場だったらしい…。
Tago’s brown frog (Rana tagoi tagoi) is croaking “Gu-gu” in a craggy place of water that permeates and went out. Because the Tago’s brown frog is always croaking in such a place, the appearance to croak quite cannot be seen. I want to see the appearance of croaking frog, and removing the stone of a craggy place. However, there was the place that Tago’s brown forg laid eggs.

タゴガエルの卵の中のオタマジャクシは白い。孵化してからもしばらくは白い。しかも孵化後、カエルになるまで一切食べ物を食べない。すごく不思議なカエルです。親ガエルの地味な外見とは裏腹に、卵塊はまるで水晶玉のような色合いで輝く。
It is white in her egg. After it hatches, they are white for a while. Moreover, they don’t eat food until becoming a frog after it hatches at all. It is a mysterious frog. The egg batch shines contrarily by the shade like the crystal ball with a sober face of parents frogs.

岩を元に戻してその場を去ると、また「グッグッ」と鳴き始めた。
I returned based on the rock and left. The frog began also to croak after a while.

この写真とは直接関係は無いけれど、日本でついにツボカビ症が発生しました。ツボカビ症は、両生類を絶滅の危機に晒しかねない、恐ろしい病気です。飼育カエルでの屋内発生のみですが、これが野外に広がった場合、何がどうなるかの予測がつきません。緊急事態宣言が発令されています。（2007年現在）

日本の特に都市部の人は、トカゲをあまり見分けていない。身近には主に２種類の昼に活動するトカゲがいます。でも、「つるつるのトカゲ」と「ざらざらのトカゲ」、という風に教えてあげると、結構すぐに話を飲み込んでくれます。みんなあまり知らないようで、意外と誰でも接する機会はあるのかもしれないですね。
The person in the city part of Japan is not good at the distinction of the kind of the lizard. Location of two kinds of lizards that act in daytime in Japanese mainland. Soon even the person who doesn’t know the lizard well understands that I teach that there are two kinds of lizards, one is “Slippery lizard” and another is “Rough skin lizard”. They were not interested in the lizard, but they might have touched for a long time.

ちなみに写真のニホンカナヘビは、ざらざらのトカゲ。つるつるのもまた今度、紹介しましょう！
By the way, Japanese grass lizard in the photograph is “Rough skin lizard”. I’ll introduce　photograph of “Slippery lizard” if there is a chance.

赤一色。こんなに派手ないでたちをしているのに、日陰ばっかりでなかなか日の当たるところに出てこないアカショウビン。
Red. Ruddy kingfisher is only in shade though it is such showy.

この写真は西表島で出会った、亜種リュウキュウアカショウビン。沖縄の方にやってくるこの亜種は、まだ見やすい種類。たくさんいて、たくさん出会うのに、あんまり写真に残っていない。三脚を持ち歩くことのあんまり無い自分には、日陰で望遠レンズを使いこなすのは難しい…。
I met him in IriomoteIsland. He is “Halcyon coromanda bangsi” (Subspecies). This subspecies that come to Okinawa are kinds that see comparatively easily. They are a lot, and I meet them a lot. However, they don’t remain so much in the photographs. Because I do not carry the tripod, it is difficult to master the telephoto lens in shade. (Because I take a picture of reptiles mainly.)

さらに、本土の方にやってくる亜種アカショウビンはもっとシャイ。姿すらなかなか見れない。
“Halcyon coromanda major” (subspecies) that comes excluding Okinawa is shier. Even the appearance cannot be seen easily.

赤一色と思われがちなこのアカショウビンだけど、１箇所だけ水色の羽を持っています。この水色の羽を輝くように撮るのが、憧れです。
They have light blue wings only by one place. My yearning is to take a picture(Light blue wing to shine).

このヘビの正体は何だろう？実は意外かも知れないけれど、日本ではとても身近なヘビ、シマヘビです。このヘビには色々な変異があるんです。
What is this snake? This snake is said, “Shima-hebi” in Japan by a very familiar snake. This snake has various mutations.

４本の黒い縦のラインが鮮やかな普通の「シマヘビ」。全身が黒い、もしくは黒い部分の多いいわゆる「カラスヘビ」。そして、全く縞がなく、不鮮明な白い横帯のみられる「ムギワラ」。
The one with a vivid line of four black lengths is usually called “Shima-hebi”. The one with a lot of parts where the whole body is black or black is called “Karasu-hebi”(Crow snake). And, there are no stripes at all, and the one being seen for side belt indistinctness and white is called “Mugiwara” (Straw).

ムギワラって、誰が言い出したのかわからないけど、的を得ている表現だと思う。鱗のおりなす微妙な模様が、ムギワラ帽子の編みこみを想像させる。ムギワラは北海道のオホーツク地方ではよく見られます。本州でも見るが、寒い地方で目にすることが多い気がします。
I think that the expression “Straw” obtains the target though who named it first is not understood.
