Ezo brown frog hibernated in the mountain stream. Their flabby bodies might be efficient though take oxygen in water from the skin.

厳冬期の1月、渓流の石の下にエゾアカガエルがいた。
繁殖期はまだまだ先なので、渓流中で越冬できるのだろう。

見ての通りブヨブヨです。

ナガレタゴガエルというカエルは、冬期に渓流中で
水から酸素を得るために体の表面積を増やすため、
皮がべろべろになると推測されています。

エゾアカガエルもナガレタゴガエルと同じ理由で
ブヨブヨするのかな。

こうして水中で潜ったまま呼吸出来れば、
冬の間、危険な水面に何度も上がらなくていい。

エゾアカガエルも、この程度はブヨブヨになります。
全てがそうかどうかはわからないけど、
繁殖期や冬期に水中からほじり出した出したオスで
こういうブヨブヨしたやつが出てきます。

渓流はあまり凍りつかないので、冬越しにもってこいなんだと思う。
しかし、渓流も凍てついてしまうと、解けた後に死骸が出てくることがある。

しかし、数ヶ月水の中って、
まさに水陸両用。両生類の名にふさわしいもんだね。

普段はもうちょっと締りのある皮膚していますよ。

Ezo brown frog at the breeding season doesn’t run away so much. The male is concentrated to find the female, and lost margin in his heart. When I see it, I become slightly sad.

繁殖期にオスのエゾアカガエルが水面に浮くのは、
相手となるメスが現れるのをいち早く見つけるためなんだと思う。

それ以外の理由で、危険を晒してまで水面に現れる理由が思いつかない。
現に人間を見るとすぐに水中に潜ってしまう。

しかし、繁殖最盛期ともなると、人間の姿を見ても
潜らないのがいたり、潜ってもすぐに現れる。

私はこの状態を「余裕が無くなってきた状態」と言っている。

メスが一番活発に動くため、それを逃さんと、オスは逃げにくくなる。
まさに余裕が無くなっている。

なんだか見てて切なくなってくる。

I love eyes of snakes. Although the muscles of their face cannot make expression, there is a rich expression in their eyes.

私はヘビの目が好きだ。

ヘビには表情筋がないから、にやけるとか、ひきつるとかは出来ないけど、目は非常に表情に富んでいる。

特にシマヘビの目は群を抜いている。
何の根拠もないが。

咬むか逃げるかの迷いの中、
小さなセミの仲間が目の上に来たが
まさに眼中に無い様子。

冬を前に昆虫採集。シマリスだって、結構虫を食べる。重要なタンパク源。
両手で掴んで、幸せそうに目を細めながら虫食べるんだ。
He collected an insect before winter. The chipmunk eats the insect. He caught an insect with both hands and eats.

ヒグマだって鮭を食べる。
ヒグマも食べ物は植物が相当の割合を占めるから、
肉食べるのは結構珍しいんだよ。
Even a brown bear eats a salmon. In fact, the food of the brown bear has many plants. Therefore  it is not usual for a brown bear to eat meat.

冬眠に向けて、頑張ってますね。
They do their best till they hibernate.

ゾウムシの象の鼻は鼻じゃない。先端に口がある。

「秋」は英単語の一つ、Fallで表される。
Fallは「落ちる」という別の意味も持つ。
“Fall” is meaning autumn. Other mean of “Fall” is like “drop down”.

私には晩秋が最も辛い季節。
ヘビを含む爬虫類や両生類は姿を消し、
木の葉が紅葉して、落ちる。
雪が降るまでの間の灰色の世界が長いと、私も落ちる。
I don’t like late Fall. Because it will be cold, the reptiles and the amphibians will be not seen. The leaves will drop down. My mind will drop down until it will be falling snow.

虫も越冬できないものは、もうすぐ落ちる。
The insects will drop down.

雪が落ちてくれば、私は少しテンションが上がる。
この雪が解けたとき、私はまた彼らに会うことができるから。
If the snow will  drop, my mind will be up. Because I will meet them when the snow melt.

驚くことに、この卵は夜には尾芽胚となり、翌日にはオタマジャクシとなって泳ぎ出ていた。
I was surprised that “this egg became the cercembryo at night and hatched on the next day”.

5月後半からこの状態の卵を撮りたくてさんざん撮影に通ってきた。
しかしこの活き活きとした卵はなかなか見つけることができなかった。
Because I wanted to take the egg which was in this state, I photographed it all the time near a water hole from the latter half of May. However, I was not able to readily find this egg which I had lively.

先に孵化したオタマジャクシや、水生小動物にどんどん食べられる。
おまけにこの異常なまでの孵化までの早さ。
さすが夏産卵のカエルならではの戦略が見事。
This egg is eaten steadily by “the ladle which hatched earlier” and an aquatic small animal. In addition it is very early that this egg hatches. A strategy only by a frog laying eggs in summer is wonderful.

木漏れ日のスポットライト。
温かみのある光の孤独感。
The spot light is sunlight through the trees. The feeling of loneliness which is the warming light.

アスファルトの灰色とジムグリの赤。
野生動物と人工物の違和感。
The gray of asphalt and the red of Japanese forest ratsnake. The feeling which is out of place.

私とジムグリの出会いは大体いつもこんな感じ。
森の中に走る道路。
人とジムグリの交差点。
Always I meet Japanese forest ratsnake on this situation. The load which through the forest, There is our crossroad.
