赤一色。こんなに派手ないでたちをしているのに、日陰ばっかりでなかなか日の当たるところに出てこないアカショウビン。
Red. Ruddy kingfisher is only in shade though it is such showy.

この写真は西表島で出会った、亜種リュウキュウアカショウビン。沖縄の方にやってくるこの亜種は、まだ見やすい種類。たくさんいて、たくさん出会うのに、あんまり写真に残っていない。三脚を持ち歩くことのあんまり無い自分には、日陰で望遠レンズを使いこなすのは難しい…。
I met him in IriomoteIsland. He is “Halcyon coromanda bangsi” (Subspecies). This subspecies that come to Okinawa are kinds that see comparatively easily. They are a lot, and I meet them a lot. However, they don’t remain so much in the photographs. Because I do not carry the tripod, it is difficult to master the telephoto lens in shade. (Because I take a picture of reptiles mainly.)

さらに、本土の方にやってくる亜種アカショウビンはもっとシャイ。姿すらなかなか見れない。
“Halcyon coromanda major” (subspecies) that comes excluding Okinawa is shier. Even the appearance cannot be seen easily.

赤一色と思われがちなこのアカショウビンだけど、１箇所だけ水色の羽を持っています。この水色の羽を輝くように撮るのが、憧れです。
They have light blue wings only by one place. My yearning is to take a picture(Light blue wing to shine).

このヘビの正体は何だろう？実は意外かも知れないけれど、日本ではとても身近なヘビ、シマヘビです。このヘビには色々な変異があるんです。
What is this snake? This snake is said, “Shima-hebi” in Japan by a very familiar snake. This snake has various mutations.

４本の黒い縦のラインが鮮やかな普通の「シマヘビ」。全身が黒い、もしくは黒い部分の多いいわゆる「カラスヘビ」。そして、全く縞がなく、不鮮明な白い横帯のみられる「ムギワラ」。
The one with a vivid line of four black lengths is usually called “Shima-hebi”. The one with a lot of parts where the whole body is black or black is called “Karasu-hebi”(Crow snake). And, there are no stripes at all, and the one being seen for side belt indistinctness and white is called “Mugiwara” (Straw).

ムギワラって、誰が言い出したのかわからないけど、的を得ている表現だと思う。鱗のおりなす微妙な模様が、ムギワラ帽子の編みこみを想像させる。ムギワラは北海道のオホーツク地方ではよく見られます。本州でも見るが、寒い地方で目にすることが多い気がします。
I think that the expression “Straw” obtains the target though who named it first is not understood.

日本ではアザラシが見る事のできる場所は北海道の一部くらいです。見られるアザラシの多くはゴマフアザラシと、ゼニガタアザラシです。
The place where what the seal sees can be done in Japan is few. And, many of seen seals are Spotted Seal, and Common Seal.

オホーツク地方に5年以上住みました。冬が来るたびにアザラシに会いに行きました。オホーツク周辺の港にはゴマフアザラシがよく来ています。ある日、体の小さなアザラシがいました。ゴマの子供かな？と思いましたが、何か気になったので、
そのアザラシの写真を撮りました。
I lived in the Okhotsk area in Japan and five years passed. It went to the seal to meet whenever winter came. Spotted Seal comes to the port well. One day, there was a seal with a small body. Is he a child of Spotted Seal? I thought. And, the seal’s photograph was taken. When I returned to the house and the photograph was seen in detail, the seal was Ringed Seal.

家に帰って写真を詳しく見ると、そのアザラシはなんとワモンアザラシのようでした。とても会いたかった種類のアザラシでした。
It was a kind of seal that had wanted to be met very much.

最初から判っていれば、もっと沢山写真を撮ったのに。出会いとは意外にあっけないものですね。
More a lot of photographs had been taken if it understood from the beginning. Meeting is the unexpectedly disappointing one.
