このヘビの正体は何だろう？実は意外かも知れないけれど、日本ではとても身近なヘビ、シマヘビです。このヘビには色々な変異があるんです。
What is this snake? This snake is said, “Shima-hebi” in Japan by a very familiar snake. This snake has various mutations.

４本の黒い縦のラインが鮮やかな普通の「シマヘビ」。全身が黒い、もしくは黒い部分の多いいわゆる「カラスヘビ」。そして、全く縞がなく、不鮮明な白い横帯のみられる「ムギワラ」。
The one with a vivid line of four black lengths is usually called “Shima-hebi”. The one with a lot of parts where the whole body is black or black is called “Karasu-hebi”(Crow snake). And, there are no stripes at all, and the one being seen for side belt indistinctness and white is called “Mugiwara” (Straw).

ムギワラって、誰が言い出したのかわからないけど、的を得ている表現だと思う。鱗のおりなす微妙な模様が、ムギワラ帽子の編みこみを想像させる。ムギワラは北海道のオホーツク地方ではよく見られます。本州でも見るが、寒い地方で目にすることが多い気がします。
I think that the expression “Straw” obtains the target though who named it first is not understood.
